OK, don't know if the title is spelt right but worry not.

About to relace the carpet set in a project car and was wondering what people's thoughts are on the best glue to use to stick the carpets to the inner cills, front inner wheel arches, toeboard/bulkhead etc?

Current thoughts are either Copydex (can you still get it - probably been outlawed by H&S) or double sided carpet tape - not sure how long this would hold on a vertical surface though.

When I laid my carpet a couple of months ago I used a combination of strong double sided tape and the spray-on carpet adhesive. Probably going to be a pain in the backside if they need to be taken up to do welding etc (I did make sure the floors were spot on before I laid it all though!) but it will NOT shift!

Last time i did my interior around two years ago i used spray on stuff and all my interior slowly sliped down with the heat if it did not have anything else to hold it (staples, double sided sticky tape)

Problem with the spray glue is that it wont stick to the metal particularly well as there is very little for it to adhere too, unless you prime it with sand paper (sod that!).

Plus spray adhesive is literally glue thinned down with thinners, the cheaper the can the more its thinned so be wary when you go to pick up that cheap can in the poundstore. I use Wurth for odd jobs.

I'd go for carpet tape myself, its more practical :-

Hi,

I've got a new carpet set ready to go into mine when i've fixed the leaks lol! I was thinking of using that velcro sticky tape (one bit on the capret back and the other on the floor) then the carpet should be "rip-uppable" if you need to for any reason...

Also on the front wheel arch humps i was thinking of using the three metal bent over strap thingys that were used originally to secure the sound deadening in place by making a tiny incision and then feeding them through the carpet. (I've taken all the sound deadening out).

I tend to only glue the sills and the crossmember directly. Beause all the rest has soundproofing behind it I use the factory tags to hold the felt in place and glue the carpet to that which is not too disimilar from the factory method. Velcro tape is a good idea but get industrial Velcro or the glue won't hold to the vertical metal surfaces too well.

I used a loctite impact glue i think which has worked really really well - it brushes on which can get a little messy but as soon as you press it against the surface it is almost instantly fixed there - obviously you can move it the first few seconds if it is wrong - but has finished really really nicely in the end!

Not had a problem with carpet spray glue, treated it like impact adhesive, spray both surfaces you want to stick, wait till it goes tacky, stick them together..

I only glue the sills, center beam, footwells, main floor sections just placed in..
Also carpeted an underseat speaker board to match the floor, been on two years non of its moved..

Use Velcro tape! That way it's easily removable in the event you need access to the actual floor panels.

I used evo stick for the inner sills, cross member and bits.

The floors are just placed in with the tags already there.

i used selley's kwik grip. not sure if it has the same name over there, but its just a brush on glue. brush onto both surfaces, wait about 5-10 mins til its tacky and press together. i only used around the edges of the carpet and along the cross member.
its heat and water resistant. used it for the headlining also.

Evo Stick, can't go wrong. I used it on mine and it's stuck even when the drivers door was leaking when it was on the drive. Only problem is use it in a very well ventilated area otherwise you'll start feeling incredibly ill!!!!
