So Im painting my mini 2 tone BMW vermillion red and satin black. I went out and bought my paint and primer and such. The only thing i found weird was that the paint i bought for the black was 2 part base with a 3 part clear. they told me i paint the black like any gloss black base, but when you go to clear coat it you mix the 2 part clear and add 35% gloss inhibitor. she said it makes the clear coat satin instead of gloss. has anyone heard of this? every other thread i read people were sooo sure that you do not clear a satin black.

i've never heard of it, but i can't assume that means it doesn't exist.

Generally all SATIN and MATT finish paints do not require laquer of any sort.

It's called matting agent, you add it to clearcoat in different ratios to get a different finish, satin or matt. Otherwise you can get satin colours by adding hardener to the basecoat, but the finish isn't as hard wearing.

okay, so when i add the matting agent it says to add: 50% for flat, 35% for satin and 25% for semi gloss. whats the difference between semi gloss and satin? i dont really know which i like.

No idea! do a tester and see what the difference is. I've never heard of semi gloss, I guess it's just slightly more shiny than satin.

i would guess semi gloss is a cellulose shine as opposed to a 2k shine. not as sharp, but definately not satin! i have used the inhibitor before as i sprayed a guitar neck for a friend and it had to be satin/matt finish. doesnt bake too well under infrared lamps, well it didnt when i used them. took at least 3 bakes before it dried fully.
