I always thaut u only used a clear cote for metalics or perl colours unless i missd the mazda looking thing as not a base white colour (ull have to watch the clips to understand this query)

Haha that Doug guy is so camp. Interesting to see they do things in the US exactly the same as here. One thing though, they didn't push the foam tape into the door shut after the primer, sealer and basecoat whioch means they will have a rough line when they de-mask it.
You always have to basecoat over pearls and metallics, it is only optional as to whether you lacquer over solid colours, but it is alot better for the finish, plus it offers UV protection so the paint doesn't fade in time.
