hi there please help me if you know how.lol Ive just put a Hif38 carb from a 998 metro hl onto my mini with an alloy manifold. We rebuilt the carb usin a su carb kit and put the carb on the car along with a new vacumn advance on my 59d4 dizzy. We got the car running again and tryed to time it as it was runnin and set up the carb at the same time. we set the jet to start point.. being flat with the top of the chamber. but the car was runnin really weak and spitting bk through the filter. we carried on and richened it all the way till you cannot anymore and the spark plugs are really weak still. what could this be? the needle is the one in it from the factory and is the ADS. also my dad thinks the head gasket has gone and sadi water may be getting into the bores and that that cld weaken it.. but the chances of it gettin into all the bore is slim and they are all the same.. please help.lol

It may be worth doing a google search and doing a bit of research into this, but this is what I found in a quick 5 minutes

That needle is probably way to weak for your application, the bits I just found suggest either a AAA or AAU for a 1275 with a Hif38, it also appears the Hif44 is a more popular choice

1275cc and rebores

1293cc (A+) + HIF44 + 10.5:1 + LCB/RC40 + 35.6x29 + MG Metro cam = BDL needle (standard for MG Metro)
Rolling road report
reported by: S E Hunt
car: "Lewis" power: 84bhp@5500rpm -- details in the report.
1275cc + HIF44 + stage-1 (LCB/Alloy manifold/RC40/K&N) = AAB needle
reported by: Marvin T. Stone
car: '60 Austin 1300
1275cc A+ + HIF44 (Standard Rover Cooper setup) = BFY needle
reported by: McLaren Iain
1300 + HIF38 + 9.5:1 + conical filter (K&N?) = AAA needle
reported by: Steve Dix car: Italian Job

1330cc + HIF44 + 11:1 + MGi/LCB/RC40 + K&N tapered/stub stack + 37x29 + 286 = BDL needle (somewhat filed)
reported by: John C Bullas
1275cc + HIF44(2red) + 9.75:1 + MGi/LCB/RC40 + K&N tapered + std-hd = BDL needle

car: 1978 Mini 1000 with Metro 1275 A+ engine (1987)
1293cc + HIF6 + K&Nc/LCB + 731 + Lumenition = BDL needle
car: Moke
reported by: Walter Kaufmann
fuel consumption: 6.5 l/100km

1380cc + HIF6 + K&Nc/LCB + Dr. Jacob's OmniPack ignition = BDL needle
car: Mini
reported by: Walter Kaufmann
fuel consumption: 6.2 l/100km
comment: better idle and cruise than original

1275+ + HIF44 + Minispares alloy inlet/K&Nc = BBW needle
reported by: John Middleton
comment: ...still think its too lean, especially at lower revs, but it's what Minispares computer told them to sell me.

What sort of exhaust have you got...if it is anything like stage 1 spec then the needle will be wrong. have just fitted a "38" to my 998 with an alloy inlet, maniflow exhaust and KN filter. tried it with the ADS and it didn't run well at all. swapped it for an AAA needle and she runs better. try this before getting into any head removal. it's cheaper and a hell of a lot quicker. i don't see anything here to suggest your head gasket has gone.

thanks alot for the advice i'll try putting my needle from my HIF44 in and give that a whirl. I forgot to mention im running a 998 with the Hif38 not a 1275 sorry. I do have a full stainless exhaust and K&N filter and so on the only mod engine wish other than stage one is a lightened flywheel thts it.

I'd go either AAA or AAU then if its a 998, sounds pretty much like a Stage 1 and those are the needles commonly used..
Just presumed it was the engine showing in your profile 1293

I agree, try an AAU needle as it sounds like you've got a stage 1 kit, 998cc engine.

Try this

http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

click on the hif38 / su4 link

then enter the needle you have, plus AAU and AAA in the other boxes

You'll see the fueling curves of the needles..

The AAU actually starts off similar to what you have then quickly gets a lot richer..

The AAA looks to be richer pretty much all the way through

we set the jet to start point.. being flat with the top of the chamber

The proper initial position is two turns richer from flush with the bridge.
