This is something I've been working on for a while now....

http://www.guess-wor...rbox/engine.htm

This will decode your engine number and detail the specification of the engine, gearbox, fueling and the original source vehicle...

At the moment the information is fairly basic but this will be added to overtime as I relate information to the engine numbers, my eventual aim is to link together things like Carbs, Distributors, cams to and provide timing figures, dwell angles, sparkies etc etc but this may take some time...

A+ engines (Mini and Metro) I believe are 99% covered, there's still some gaps relating to A series engines, especially the early < 1976.

I'm now looking for information on the earlier engines, especially those which are non-mini, eg ADO16's (Austin America's), Allegro's, Midgets, Moggies, Marina's etc... and filling in the gaps in the A+ being Maestro's and Montego's

Please have a play, if there's anything missing or wrong then please inform me and I will endeavour to add the details in.

Neither of my engines are listed...

Firstly, 12A2K70368427 - 1275 MPi engine...
Secondly - 99H998P106416 - shows on the log book as a 1275, and there's a 1275 in the car, but the engine number relates to a 998???

Now the 12A 2k * engine prefix I have no information on at all !!! typical..

The 99H number you quote is a 998 Automatic engine, which suggests the vehicle has been converted either to Manual, or a 1275 Auto put in there... and who ever did it just didn't get the engine number changed on the v5.

You've got one piece of info now on the 12A 2k* prefix now guessworks :trooper:

yes, the car used to be a 998 auto, but on the log book is listed as a 1275... there's no engine number printed on the block anywhere...

shall I invent an appropriate one? :trooper:

It's not really that important, only if you come to sell the vehicle.. and the buy asks why...

Are you sure that's not 12A 2L K70 as that is an MPI engine number prefix yours just does not fit the pattern for a 1275 Mini engine number

12V is the code for a 1275 engine use 'in-line' so a rwd original fitment, like the Midget, Moggie, Marina.

I do have some of these numbers but as yet not enough information on them to put into the database.

I assume you've looked on the block and not just on the V5 :)

In which case you mush be Special as you engine number is 'not standard' to rover !!!

The engine number on later A+ 1275 engines is etched into the top of the block, not on a plate as per previous engines.

Here's the pattern for the engine numbers on these...
