Cv Joints?

Hi guys,
my drive shaft was not sticking into my cv joint at all and i couldnt allign it..

So i finally got seperated the rotor and hub and everything and ligned up the drive shaft with the cv and gave it a nock with a hammer and it went in and its strongly in there...

As you can see its quite a fair bit in ... but u can also see the teeth are not all the way in there..
Is there a way i can tell its completely in? Like are you ment to be able to still see the teeth of the drive shaft??

as far as i know you can usually still see some teeth, as long as you have put it in as far as you can then it should be ok.

You can see in your first photo there is a flat section ring around the shaft, just short of the end of the spline. This sits in a groove cut into the spline and is the stop for inserting the shaft. Your second photo shows the stop hard against the inner member, you should also beable to feel this. That's as far as it can go.

There is a problem however, you said that you couldn't get the shaft to stay in the joint. That is because the circlip is missing from the shaft end in your first photo. There is a second groove at the very end and this should have a round section spring clip in place, that is what locks the shaft into the joint. If you didn't refit your clip before inserting the shaft then all that is holding it in place currently is the grease you have put on the end sticking it together. That is bad, you need a clip there. It's good to grease the end but I'd use copper grease rather than lithium, lithium grease will soon become liquid at the temperature inside a CV joint and all run out of the shaft socket and contaminate the moly grease. Then there'll be little or none left where you want it.

Also, that joint looks quite mucky in the photos. CV joints need to be absolutely spotlessly clean internally with only the proper moly grease inside them. There looks to be some dirt and contamination inside. My apologies if it's just the photo making it look like that but any dirt or foreign objects at all, even the smallest piece will wear a CV joint out in no time. It might even seize.

Thanks dan! I really appreciate all that thorough detail taht you gave me!

At the moment i took the cv joint out and have got it soaking in a bucket of degreaser so that i can clean it out fully and haev a look if its in good condition..
Is there anyway to tell if the cv is gone after cleaning it up??

So what i planned was get a spring clip for the cv get the proper grease for the cv and just refit it all after cleaning it up..
Is that ok or do you think its definatly better off buying a new cv??

Sadly you only really know if a CV is OK when you are driving on it. If it's worn out it will knock on corners. You can see if it's really worn out to the naked eye but checking closely for fine wear is far harder, you need to check the fit of each individual ball in the grooves in both members. You can just generally check for missing chunks and obvious damage though, just keep it clean is the best thing.

What you plan sounds ideal, the new CV grease should come with the boot kit. You don't need to use the full sachet of grease, that's a generic amount for any joint. I seem to remember it needs 1 ounce in the Mini joint. The spring clip is just a little round wire circle, don't be surprised if it just looks like a bent paper clip when it turns up! Make sure the groove on the shaft is clean and use a bit of copper slip on the clip and all over the spline. If these get rusty in use getting the joint off when you need to later becomes tricky.

Thanks for all the help guys i ended up getting it installed and here is how. If i have made ne wrong steps please point it out so i can change it... otherwise people can use this for their next installation...

First i took the castle nut off and seperated the hub and the drive shaft from each other, took the old boot off..

Anyway so form last time i took the drive shaft and gave it a clean.
As you can see ... haha

Then i put the boot on to get it on over the drive shaft head i took it inside out and pulled it through, which was much easier than trying to push it through.
So i got the boot on..

Once the boot was on i was able to fill it with the proper grease supplied..

I wasn tsure if i should put a bit of grease on the cv or not but i had a bit of grease from the stuff supplied so i gave it a bit on the nob and then put the circlip on the driveshaft..

Once the circlip was on i put the cv joint in the hub just to balance it.. Then could line the drive shaft into the cv joint..

Once lined up i gave it a couple of bangs with a mallet on the drive shaft end and knocked the driveshaft into place.

Put the boot back on the cv joint and put it back in the hub assemble

And that was the end of it ..

A lil bit generous on the grease 'n you did secure the boot to the joint with something I trust? :P

I also spotted a grease nipple you may want to sort out so you can get your grease gun on it without too much of a fight.

Yeah i definatly secured the boot i just hadnt done it there but yes at both ends the boot was secured.
Also i just applied all the grease that was given in the satchet and nothing extra.

But what grease nipple was that that u did spot? What do u mean by sorting out? Cleaning up or turning? If its cleaning up how would you do that ? steel brush or what do u do?
