Hi all

was wondering if anyone out there had this problem am having

well the story goes like this my mini is a 998 and the gears all work fine but second gear wants to keep jumping out

from 1st to 2st and 3rd to 2st...all the other gears are sweet as a nut no problem there

so dont think its the clutch could it be the gear is self gone or the change rod playing up?

hope some can help cheer peeps..:P

It could just be something like the engine mountings allowing the engine to move and pull on the selector.

Use a bar to lever the box in the subframe, see if there's much movement or signs of separation in the mountings. Still be quite hard to replacate what happens on the road.

The torque reaction of the engine will only try to deselect 2,4 & reverse and 2nd will see the most torque. Does it always jump out when you put your foot down or let the clutch out sharpish?

It could be a fault with the syncro, but that would likely cause crunchy gears as well 'n it'll be cheaper 'n less hassle to look at other possibilities first.

I don't wish to sound alarmist but it could just as easily be worn shift forks and/or detents. This is particularly true if you or a previous owner had a habit of driving around resting your hand on the gearshift lever.

The usual time for a rod to knoc out of gear is when it's not under load, ie, turning a corner and basically free wheeling...

The cause is knackered synchro springs, and possibly a gear with worn dog teeth...

It could just be something like the engine mountings allowing the engine to move and pull on the selector.

You mean the adjustable engine stabiliser on the bottom, not being done up tight

It's a worn selector fork, or could also be the little black press fit bush in the back of the diff that no one ever changes. :owned:

Did you ever find out what it was? I have the exact same problem; It's a long way to engage, and when i put load on it, it jumps out...

And according to the previous owner it's a refurbed gearbox :P
