- The sender takes up a tiny bit of room
- Spi/Mpi have more gubbins in the tank which takes up more room
- The filler neck isn't right at the top of the tank, so you can't fill past it. Hence there is always a bit of space above filler neck thats always empty.
- If you put the pump right into the tank then it'll fill the tank even less
- Even when the gauge has gone all the way through the red you'll still have a few litres of petrol left
- The take off for the petrol pipe isn't at the bottom of the tank, so even when you've run out of petrol completely (engine dies) you'll still have a little left at the bottom of the tank.

It costs me about £18 to fill it up when the guage is showing nearly empty (when I bought her last year it was £15
)
That's all I need to know if I start trying to work stuff out like mpg and stuff I think my brain might implode.
Yea mine's the same price from nearly empty to full. Much more than when I got the car

Thanks for that Jammy and Dan

I suppose "how much you put in" also depends on how much you are paying for your fuel.
