I recently purchased some 12" ultralight alloy wheels second hand.
They have 165/60/12 tyres on them.
My question is, do I have to stick to that tyre?? or will any tyre fit (i.e. 155/70/12 or 145/70/12 etc.)
Which is the best for the car??
Also 145/70/12 are £28 each 165/60/12 are £43 each
The wheels are on a 1988 Mayfair so are wider tyres necessary?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Depends on the width of the wheel. To get an idea of the tyre width, the first figure in the tyre 'spec' is the width of the tyre in mm, so 165 = 165/24.5 = 6.49 inches (roughly)
145 would be about 5.7 inches.
Hope that helps a bit

They are 12 inch 5jj ultralight wheels.
I just want to know what the best size tyre for the wheel would be.
Thanks

Unless your after a specific make of tyre you can get 165/60/12 cheaper than £43
Minispares list
Falken @ £31.36
Yokohama A539 @ £40.75

I have 12x5 and run Yoko's A539 165/60/12. They're reasonably wide (I used to have 145/70/12 on my 12X4.5 wheels) & give much better handling in my opinion. I've certainly noticed a big difference...(25mph roundabouts have become 35mph roundabouts...
).

The ones that are fitted are more probably a better tyre then the budget ones.
I'd stick with the wider one, will be better for cornering and looks.
The ultralight's you have are 5" wide then, standard steels are 4.5" I think. So wider tyre is better fit.

Yeah, but by the time someone charges you £10 ea for fitting the price is about the same.
Unless anyone knows a good price tyre place in Surrey??
Cheers!

I dont know if this will work for you but i got my tyres from a tyre distribution warehouse, 50 quid for 2 165 60 12 falekns and got them fitted for 10 quid the pair. Try being a bit cheaky and find one.
