Got this in the UK two weeks ago as you see it.

it used to be purple metalic.
I want to restore it to what it should be.
the shell is not that bad, it has alot of examples of how not to do it, I will come to them one by one.

After looking at this van I have made a list of panels that need changing, its not to many which is good news.
Someone has bodged it in the past so most of the work will be correcting that.
whats ever happened here? you can see the massive use of filler to the point of it cracking!
filler is to smooth out small ripples and not replaster a panel!
I will have to take all this off, then I can see whats to do to correct it.

This is what happens when you slap tons of filler on your bodywork. it cracks and lets water in, which then rusts. the filler on this body is at about 6mm plus.

Eww, that's a bit concerning.

Good luck with it though, I'd love a van one day, or maybe a pickup, mmmm, rear engine pickup.

Sorry, I'll stop dribbling in your thread :dontgetit:.

That arch looks like it needs some love.

Get it down to bare metal and see what's left .

Have you ever wondered what an outer sill looks like when it is rusty and then had another slipped on?
the oversill has been tacked on, this in time must be bad practice becouse the old sill just rusts on to a point where the structures of the car become a danger. think you have a honda or R1 in it!

Well i need new outer sills thats for sure, the inner have a bit of rust up front so i will be replacing them as well.
I have spent time setting up the inner and outer A panels so the door fit.
Remember you should fit the bonnet, wing, A panel, hinges and door. I fit door rubber and locks as well. giggle it around until you are happy with all the gaps around these parts. thats not so easy and will take abit of time until its perfect. its time well spent, if not done proper the doors will stick out at all the wrong places later when its all to late.

I'm interested to see your work around the Inner and Outer A-Panels and getting it all right etc.

I'll be doing the same job on my Mk1 in a couple of months.

Great looking project, I'm sure it'll look great once you've finished it!

I'm currently re-designing the front site, but after its done we're going to be putting loads more articles on there. You mind me using these images to highlight the problems caused by oversills?

JB use what you like. If it helps others to be aware of the pitfalls and do a better job great! thats what TMF is about.
I will be adding lots more.
The outer hinge A panels as well.
