Hi guys

My horn's carked it - it was working, then stopped but came back to life with a bit of wire jiggering on the back of the indicator stalks, but is now defunct again.

I've noticed that there is a black wire that has come disconnected from somewhere.

No idea, where, and the wiring diagram in the back of the Hayne manual isn't helping much either.

Basically, there is a black wire coming from the purple/black (from memory) - it's crimped in with the purple/black wire but I can't for the life of me figure out where it's supposed to be connected to.

Could someone have a gander at the wiring on their stalk arrangement for me and perhaps take a piccie showing where this black wire on the indicator side of the stalk system is supposed to go please?

Thanks

Here's a pic if it helps!

I found I'd accidentally disconnected a red/blue wire (which I've shown), as well as the mysterious black wire....

Well, seeing as no-one had any idea, I thought i'd post my findings up.

I took the switch apart at the weekend.

The indicator part has the bulk of the plastic behind the metal cover plate, which is probably why it costs more than the wiper side - it looks like if the steering column clamp arrangement is cracked or broken (like mine is) that a new indicator wiper stalk would also mean this clap bit is new - so you could also solve the wobbly stalks issue if needs be.

Undo the 2 x 1/4" bolts that hold the wiper stalk to the metal plate, then slowly and carefully remove the stalk from the plate.

There are 2 small springs with plastic caps on beneath here, hence the need to take the plate off slowly to stop them pinging off into oblivion.

The central round collar bit will come out too.

With the place removed, lift off the black plastic bit in the middle - the 2 small springs with plastic caps may stay in place here, depends how much grease is in there to hold them in.

There is alse a small copper alloy roller/pin on one side and a ball bearing on the other beneath this plastic bit. The copper pin fits into the black plastic bit you are removing - it fits into a slot on the underside (beneath one of the small springs) - you'll see the contacts it uses on the base section of the wiper stalk once the central plastic bit is removed.

Damn...wish I'd taken pics now :dontgetit:

Anyway, with the central black plastic bit off, you can see the purple+black wire which goes to one part of the horn switch in the stalk, and the black wire which fixes to the stalk metal.

This is the black wire that had fractured on mine. I carefully stripped a small bit of insulation back, threaded the black wire back into the switch along side the purple+black one, soldered and insulated with some tape.

There is a small groove in the white plastic 'square' bit at the end of the stalk, the black wire needs to be pushed into this, or the black plastic centre bit of the switch won't fit back on properly.

With that done, it was a case of using some of the existing grease to hold the roller pin and springs in place on the slot on the central plastic part, putting the central collar bit back in place and then carefully mating the stalk back to the metal plate.

It's all back together and working merrily now.

Anyway, apologies for the long thread, but thought it'd be worth explaining for others, as the inside of the switch isn't as scary as you might imagine

I'm sorry your prob slipped through the net and thanks for the tips. Especially since I have to do similar to mine :dontgetit: before the new loom goes in.

No problem, it's better to have no answers than a load of guessed ones.

wish you'd taken pics too! (and that I'd read this thread before I started taking the stalks apart and thus avoid having the wiper side ping apart nearly taking my eye out!) think a few bits are now MIA in my garage somewhere so looks like I'm going to have to buy a new wiper stalk (can only find roller thing and a copper v-spring :proud: was replacing just the indicator stalk but I guess from looking at the condition of some of the wires that doing both stalks is probably a good idea!

Anyone got a photo of the inside workings of the wiper stalk? Showing where the spring goes and roller bearing etc.....?
