Hey,

I'm looking to set up twin carbs and i've been reading up on the colortune method, trouble is, it sounds to simple to be true!

What's your opinions and could you recommend a different method of mix setting other than RR.

Cheers!

Yeh they're a giggle...

Ok to get it up and running, then go get it done properly!

They're ok for getting the carbs to run the same - but not necessarily properly. More of a giggle is watching someone who really knows what they are doing set them up with a piece of hosepipe jammed in their ear!

isn't the hosepipe in the ear for the airflow speed rather than the mixture?

Yep, for balancing the carbs.

The gunson tool for that is TOTAL rot. I ended up doing it by ear. As for mixture, it works aright for it. Just going "hmm, is that blue the same blue as the other side" for a while.

I can't see there are many alternatives, what else works cylinder by cylinder?
A probe up your tail pipe will just give you an average of all cylinders.

personally I use one... and they can't be that bad when you consider my 1330 went on the rollers a month ago 3 years after it had been set up with one and was stuffing out 85 at the wheels...

What you have to consider is not only the use of the tool, but the person who's using it understands what they are viewing..

Like I have a crypton tuner in the unit, but I still use a strobe and a colortune to set up an engine because I don't fully know how to use the crypton. But it's useful for other things like putting my coffee cup on >_<

Provided it is used properly you can get good results and as another contributor says it is one of the only ways to get e measure cylinder by cylinder. From my recollection cylinder 3 on a standard head always runs a fraction weaker on the A series.

Oxygen/Petrol mix does produce precise changes to emitted wavelength of light emitted on combustion the variability comes in the operatives ability to see this corrrectly whichis dependant upon the amount of background light. In other words use it in a dimly lit area not in bright sunshine you will observe different results.

No matter what i did to my car, my colourtune would always,.. ALWAYS, show blue.

Edit,.. carb was beyond worn! Colortune is fantastic! Have since setup the idle mixture on 4 engines and each is running beautifully

Have used one a month ago to help set up my twin hif6 on the 1380. Didn't really need it to be honest but it was good to see the colour change of combustion; screw in till revs die and engine struggles - orange/yellow flame
screw out, revs pick up - blue flame

done!

no mater what i did it would always show white.
but it did tell me to get some new needles.
once the needles were in it was a doddle to set up.

if your setting twin carbs up i would buy 2 colortunes as it was a pain swapping it over from one side to the other.
then sell 1 of them and get most of your money back.
