You definately sure its oil? Sometimes if its running too rich it poos out nasty black carbon stuff that could look like oil, I know because my housemate went mad when I started up on full choke and covered her numberplate.. :D

Also, if you do a short journey, water condenses in your exhaust and then spits out sooty water on start up. Can be that

It is black and sooty, maybe it is. i do hope so. come to think of it, it looks more like soot than oil. i normally notice it when its cold and choke on.

Shouldn't be excessively sooty though,... i'd forgive a little smoke on first startup with choke out on full, but after that it shouldn't smoke at all.

Is it definatley soot?... or is it oily too?>.. mine used to do this and it turned out the Piston rings were dead.

I put a newspaper on the ground after intial start up and reved the engine. It was black runny sooty type, and it dried pretty quick. I am hoping if it were oil, it would have been a bit greasier. I havent tried it after running it for a bit, just noticed it yesterday and its raining today. dont want to get it wet.

Sounds like maybe you need to De-coke (scrape all the carbon deposits left from combustion off valve faces and surrounding metal) the head (or/and wang some valve/carb cleaner through with your next tank of fuel) and do some long journeys now and then to clear the engine through.

Also try running a good tankful of 'Vpower' or similar fuel like BP Ultimate through it,... It contains Detergents etc that will clean your carb/injection system etc through as you drive

Fill it up and then give it a good wang down the motorway for a couple of junctions

Cheers, will it also make my 998 go faster?
