i do believe i need a new rack in my 84 mini lhd. i can get them here in the states for around $165. im rather handy and have rebuilt lots of cars, engines ..bla bla bla. However, i have never done anything with steering, on any type of car.

So, i am wanting to know how hard of a job is it to take the steering rack out and stick in another? Any special tools? Should i just take it to the shop. i will be using a shop to do the alignment though. Thanks

its not the toughest job to do. you will need to lower the front subframe as the rack wont pass along the bulkhead without hitting it. I undo the shock mountings, the front subframe rear mountings and then the two tower bolts finally undo the front teardrop mounts and lift the car up enough to pass the rack through. obviously you would have removed the two steering rack shackles and undone the pinch bolt connecting the column before this.
