The hazard lights and the indicators run on two seperate wiring systems so they arent that much related to one another, first port of call is the fusebox to see if anything is gone there, if not and you have access to some kind of volt/amp meter, have a poke about to check for power where it should be! Also, may be worth getting a new flasher unit as they do tend to have a mind of their own!

This happened with my mini last yeah, i changed the fuses in the engine bay, checked all the wiring and discovered that a previous owner had been splicing into the wires, removed all of the offending wires and put in a new hazard switch and it all works fine!

Check you still have reverse and brake lights, if you don't then its likely the top (35A) fuse in the engine bay fusebox is the culprit. My indicators packed up last week, but the hazards worked fine, it was only when I twigged that my reversing lights and brake lights were off that I figured out what it was.

A quick clean of the terminals in the fuse box got them working again for me.

Cheers.

Yes, the most likely cause is dirty connections on the fuse box. Probably a good idea to clean up all the connections on the fuse box while you're at it. If the indicators are palying up now, something else is likely to start causing problems soon as well.
