Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone could advise on the risks of spraying with 2k paints? I'll soon be spraying my mini in 2k (not in the uk of course) and was under the impression I'd get away with using a cartidge mask but after reading online just now it appears there are severe dangers and the website I saw said only use an airfed full face mask. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was true, and if I do indeed require an airfed mask if anyone could recommend anywhere to buy a setup?
Thanks a lot guys

Dave

Air Fed mask is a must for use with 2k, very bad for your health!

I am currently hunting about for one of these, I've been informed devilbiss is the one of the better makes available. Just been looking on ebay, as they are expensive!

Yes they are! I've been having a gander and have seen the full kits at around £400. This has put a real spanner in the works as I've already forked out about £300 for all my paint and equipment and now I've just found this out I may aswell have paid for a pro respray at around £800. I'm starting to doubt it being worth buying one unless you're a business. If I can;t find a reasonably priced one I'm just going to have to spray my engine bay (cartridge mask) and hold my breath for one coat, run out hold breath for second coat etc. lol then plonk the engine in and take it to a pro.
(Any sprayers near sheffield feel free to pm me)

Dave i have followed you for the past 6 months talking about doing a respray! You have to just do it £400 mask or not, im sure you will need it again sooner or later and if you dont you can sell the stuff on Ebay no problem.

I know it's terrible aint it! :mrcool: Beleive me it will happen I've just had various issues over the past few months so I'm running way off schedule. If I can;t get a decent price on a mask I'm going to have to kill my lungs and spray the engine bay myself and then take it to a sprayer for the rest. If I can get the right stuff i'll do it myself and let you know how I get on :o

Could you not compromise and use cellulose paint?

Not true actually, it is still legal to spray with 2K, just not legal to produce it. You can get compliant 2K solid colours, which are completely legal to manufacture and use.

Spraying 2K without an air fed is a very bad idea, not worth the severe health risks involved.

health effects being? I just read about cancer risk and containing cyanide...dont bother not using a resp/air supply....no reason to not from the look of it.

It is being banned because it has very high VOC's and is bad for the environment and dangerous to use.

That link is very good, read it and it'll give you all the answers as to why you should use an air fed.

That machine mart mask is no use at all for 2k, it has gaps around the edge! This is the type you need LINK

Again panelbeater peters here to save the day. I really owe you a pint mate - you got paypal? :mrcool:
What size compressor would I need to run those masks off, any idea? (I'm going to need a seperate one as my current compressor is only just powerful enough for the gun.)

^^^^ there is the problem....an average home compressor wont have the oomf to power a gun and a mask together.

Know anyone who does scuba diving? a bottle of clean air and a nice tight-fitting mask. Could be ideal.

As for the dangers..well, I have sprayed 2-pack without an airfed mask and Im still alive. Does this make it ok? Well, its up to you to decide. I used an organic filter mask (iirc) and did the painting in a fairly large open shed, so not too much concentration of fumes/spray. I wore an all-in-one boilersuit, gloves, hat and eye goggles so almost no skin was exposed. I sprayed each coat, then went outside and left it to dry, minimising my exposure.

No doubt the experts will be along to tell me how silly I was, but I weighed up the risks and made my choice. IN MY OPINION spraying one car isnt going to kill you, as long as you take reasonable precautions. The toxins involved in 2-pack paint are cumulative....that means they never leave your body, so the more you paint, the more toxins you will accumulate untill they start causing you problems.

Ive done it, and I personally know several people who have done it too, with no ill effects.
Its up to you to decide.
