Probably a stupid question with an obvious answer but what would the differences be between pinking and the big ends going? I've had a look on the forum but can't really find anything, unless I'm missing it! I'm hoping that my engine is just pinking but I wouldn't know what that sounds like so if there's a clear difference between the two then that would really help me.

Thanks in advance

Helen

retard the ignition, if the knocking goes then it was pinking... if it's still there than it's your bigends...

but big end knocking will still occur while the engine is not under load, where as pinking will not, unless your timings WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY out

When you're big ends / mains have gone its a deffinate knock when the engine oils warm. Pinking on the other hand sounds like a light "pinking" noise. Tis hard to explain without personaly being " there " to show you what it sounds like.

Ok, well all the description I can give at the moment is that under 2500 rpm there is no knocking, but hit that and it knocks and I haven't tried it above to be honest! I broke down on sunday with very loud constant knocking, bit of a lack of acceleration and heating up. Now it doesn't knock below the 2500 but I haven't tried it above that yet. Any suggestions?

If you do have pinking how do you fix the problem?

Well if I can get a few more miles out of it that's something at least! Won't be able to look at it now for a few weeks but hopefully I'll get it sorted then.

Cheers everyone

Just becareful though as if it is beg ends and your driving it and it goes it will cause a hell of a lot more problems than you have now....think of saving for a new gearbox and engine as this is what you will need at the very least if it goes.

Wasnt funny at the time but now i look back on it i can laugh its one of these things that happens and you learn from it.
How far you planning on driving it to get the engine done?Just make sure you dont over rev it and take things slow im sure it will be fine and hold out
