:( Hi First of all a big Thank you to everyone who helped with the problem I had with the suspension on the mini. All sorted.

I am going to have some bodywork done on the car and it needs to have the windscreen removed. I have been told that I will need to have a special tool to remove the silver trim that surrounds it.

Can anyone tell me what this tool is called and where to get hold of it.

Thanks in advance.

No tool required for removing, should be a metal clip near the top, flick this out with a small screwdriver...then just use screwdriver to pull the first 1" out of the trim, then just carefully pull it out..

You do really need a windscreen insert tool for putting it back though, minispares sell them, but you can get a better one with a roller on it, just can't find a link

found it

http://www.frost.co....?productID=8104 pretty expensive though

The minispares one

You don't NEED a filler strip tool - I use a very blunt old screwdriver, some fairy liquid, a steady hand and patience. Filler strip tool does make it a lot easier though.

Silver semi rigid trim is a lot easier to work with than the flexi black version.

First one we did we used a screwdriver, what a ball ache :( we've got the cheaper minispares tool, and last one we did was a doddle, like you say fairy liquid helps loads

Another thing we just tried as well and seems to be working, bro in laws seal used to leak slightly (new seal) , so when we just had to change a chipped screen we smeared vasoline around the window frame before fitting the rubber..so far no leaks

surely fairy liquid bubbles for a bit, and the salt is corrosive? I know it works, was just wondering if anyone's tried baby oil?

If you want to lube/waterproof a rubber seal, then you should always use a non-oil-based product....as all decent Family Planning Clinics will tell you. :(

Yea, I've also been advised against using washing up liquid because the salt will attack the windscreen...

I wouldn't worry about the salt in it, doubt theres that much in it, and your car probably gets subjected to far worse from road salt.

Besides when we recently removed a windscreen that was chipped, the metal work and screen looked fine, and we'd fitted it 2 yrs previous using washing up liquid.

Just tried a search about it, MG Owner club even have a page about fitting screens which says use washing liquid

Not saying its right though :( :)
