Hi
im looking to get another mini in the near future after being without one for a few years :(
I can only drive automatics and used to have a 998 clubman with the older style automatic gearbox which had no park gear and a strange little selector lever.

I suppose if a newer 1275 came up at the time id go for it but i wanted a 998 for economy to be honest i was just wondering if i had to have a gearbox replaced on a 998 could the later style 1275 autobox be fitted to an 998 auto engine?

Or should i just get a 1275 auto in the first place?
As i said i want the economy but my other half who will also be driving it wants us to get a 1275 are the economy savings worth the loss in peformance?

What advantages are there with the later autobox?
Id love to hear from anybody who drives an auto which they prefer the old 998 auto or the later 1275 auto?

Thanks
Jodie :)

My 998 auto is a 78 clubman. It has a conventional "style" selector but has no park. It's ratio's are N - 1 - 2 - 3 - D (D being fully automatic mode). Is this like the one you had?.I just select Drive and otherwise leave it alone. The manual suggests leaving it in drive when you park up.It is an absoulute joy to drive and would probably be economical too if i didn't go flat out everywhere.I am on the lookout for a 1275 engine/box to upgrade, but there is nothing wrong with the 998 really,it's quite nippy.Good luck with your search!

Ade.

We've got a 998 Automatic. Performance is really gained and maintained by regular oil changes (every 3,000 miles or less). I've never thought of our automatic being that quick, although it is a convertible and so I've never really tried to drive it all that fast.

Thanks for your thoughts, yup my clubby had the same gearbox type as yours ade :o
Im not really interested in speed the way fuel prices are going:(
Im curious to get an idea of whether or not the difference in economy between the 998 and the 1275 auto makes it worth going after a 998?
To be honest if there isnt that much difference and a 1275 comes up first ill get whatever fits the bill at the time :w00t:
I was just curious really if the type of gearbox fitted to the 1275 would work fitted to the smaller engine?
Afterall there the same engine its just the capacity really;)
By the way edi im not usually taken by convertables but yours is very kewt :D

Yes the 1275 auto box is different to the 998, as you have noticed it has a park... it also is slightly stronger in construction...

but will fit onto a 998...

Your best option however is to look for a good original low mileage, full service history 1275 auto... be wary of ones which have had engine swaps and the likes..

or buy a smart
