My new head has a bypass hose doodah, but my new water pump doesn't. I can't be bothered to buy another pump with the bypass, so can I safely just blank off the head bypass with a length of hose and fat bolt jubilee clipped in the end?

You need some sort of bypass so water circulates round the thermostat.

I thought even non bypass pumps still had the pipe cast in, it just isn't drilled? The pipe in the head is screwed in so you could possibly replace it with a tapped plug (rust permitting) as they did with the A+ Metros...

or you could do as you suggest

Yes you can but still need some form of bypass, I suggest drilling the thermostat, search to see where this should be done.

When you put the bolt ina little glue or gasket sealant doesn't hurt either.

You can, and in my opinion if you do a good job with the tapped plug on the head then you will have one less leak to worry about.

You must have so sort of by-pass. This is what I have done:

Holes should be about 1/8" or 3mm (or less)

Try drilling water pump If you can't then you will need a blanking sleve to replace stat in cyl head .................

no the metro has a sandwhich plate design which has the heater take off, this performs the bypass function, also why there is no heater take off on metro lump heads.

no you don't, see above post above, just drill some holes around the thermostat edge.

i would get a proper screw in bung :xxx:

So why does my cooper head have a pipe that attatches to the water pump, but it has the sandwich plate on the thermostat?

Not sure, but I agree with the above comment, blank the water pump, and drill the thermostat, I tend to put two or three holes in about 5mm each, as I think that about matches the diameter of the bypass hose, I did work it out once... Anyone know the bypass hose internal diameter?

i believe its because the mini has a valve in the heater feed to vary the heat, the metro has the heater
under the bonnet permanently on (no valve, the heat is varied by air flow though the heater matrix)

this means when the valve is closed there would be no bypass

i believe the only minis without the bypass hose are the mpi's, not 100% sure on that though never really looked
