Right this is my first cry for help on this forum. A few months ago my cooper started to jump forward when in fourth gear i was told it could be electrical so i played around with the electrics and found that one of the leads was loose on the plugs. However it started again a week or so later a took him to the garage and they checked the ECU there was no faults he thought it was the crank sensor. I left the garage and it worked again for a few days but started doing it again in 3rd gear it feels like the fuel is being blocked for a split second causeing the car to stop then start again now the exhaust is blowing badly and the problems got worse sometimes it wont evan start and theres alot of smoke when the engine starts. also the steering wheel shudders very badly when you first start. are theres faults all linked i put a new crank sensor in yesturday but the engine turned over but wouldnt spark into life.

Sorry for the long post but desperate now

Neil

The blowing exhaust wont be helping anything.... but Id suggest checking your headgasket ASAP.... If its an SPi Cooper the comp ratio is a bit higher than a normal sprite and you might have been seeing the first signs of gasket failure.... as you are seeing smoke etc Id guess that the gasket has completly gone and the lack of a start suggests its now lost compression across pots..... for the price of a head gasket id whip it off and change it, ( mornings work really )... then while its all apart de coke and sort your valve seats by a bit of lapping with paste to get them nice and greyed..... if you have the head off its a good time to check all your MAP sensor tubes as they will be easier to get at.... fix your blowing exhaust then put all back together and make sure you have NO AIR LEAKS ANYWHERE.....

why the crank sensor should be suspect I dont really know as without it the car simply wont run at all.... the fact that the car drives says its unlikly to be crank sensor..... so as you have a spare one.... any chance of me having it...lol

hope this helps and report back soon

Can't hep regarding the problems, but I've edited your topic title to something more relevant and moved this thread to the injection technical section where people with the knowledge of the dark magic can help

I've just looked at my plugs and they are black powdery so ive cleaned them and the cars stopped jolting forward i presume the mixtures to rich so could this be the problem and not the head gasket. Today when i leave the car ticking over its only at 500 revs then after a short time it drops to 300 then it will stall is this all linked.

cheers

Prob running rich due to the exhaust blowing and affecting the lambda output...... as for the idle speed.... try setting the lost motion gap EXACTLY as Haynes tells you to.... no short cuts...but do it after you fix the exhaust.

The exhaust is leaking around the flexi bit at the bottom of the downpipe theres none of the mesh stuff left on it can i just wrap that exhaust tape stuff around it to seal it?

cheers

Try STP fuel injection cleaner before you do anything. I've had rough running problems caused by blockages. Even the AA man was stumped and suggested buying a new ECU- but a £4.99 bottle did the trick! Its where I always start now if I'm getting rough running or loss of power etc.

Now its only running rough when the engines cold i drive 3 miles and i get no problems after that. But when i first start off it will sound like a machine gun if i easy of the accelerator and when i am at home it will stall when i get out to shut the garage door after i bring it out of the garage if i rev the engine for a while loads of black smoke comes out. it also back fired yesturday has anyone any more ideas. Ive put one lot of reddex in Ive notice the pipe down to the carbon cylinder thing has seen better days could this effect it
