Paul Smith designed the Paul Smith Limited Edition minis, (very nice special editions), and they are the blue/purple shade you see above, with anthracite minilite wheels, and lime green accents here and there. Can't give you a figure of how many were made but most were for export (probably japan).

Paul Smith also designed a few one-off minis such as the striped one or the polka dot one (not pictured), which are in various museums. Obviously you can't buy these (unless you're VERY rich) but the regular (well, as regular as you can get with a limited edition) Paul Smiths come up every now and again.

They are one of the several special editions that are relatively left unmodified by almost all owners. Probably due to the fact that they look pretty great out of the box with their colour coded arches

If you're interested in the history of fashion and design, the mini was right there at the heart of it. In fact until it became popular with the rich and famous it didn't sell very well among ordinary folk, who thought it a bit below their dignity. But the Beatles and others made it cool and then the designers of the day produced a stack of special editions; and more celebs had one-offs made, vying for the most way-out design or just to have the most expensive rebuild. David Bowie's mini was mirror-reflective and Kate Moss had spider's webs painted on hers. The most informative and readable (not too technical) account I've found so far is The Mini -- the Making of a Modern Icon, by Brian Laban (pub. Collins).
