Hello Mini Forumers,
Im new to this site and to leaving forum posts, but was looking for some much needed help or advice on a problem which has arisen with my standard 2000 Rover Cooper Sport. The car has done 16,500 miles
The problem;
When driving in any gear there is a loud whining sound/noise which progressivley gets louder with the higher the speed and gear. The whining continues when the clutch is pressed and when the car is left breifly in neautral between gear changes.
I had the gear box replaced just over a year ago with a re-conditioned box from Mini Sport after the original gear box's 2nd gear went after just 6,000 miles (car bought with just 1,000 miles on the clock). Since its replacement was fitted by Green and Whites the car has leaked oil, which it appears to be leaking from the rod change area.
Ive done an oil and filter change last week.
If anyone could shine any light onto what may be the cause of the problem it would be greatley appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

do your revs seem correct for the speed when driving?? if they are to high it could possibly be the clutch slipping slighty,, but dont take this as gospel. im surprised no-one has tried answering this for you.

A friend of mini had a similar sounding problem, IIRC it turned out to be the CV grease being worng and getting too hot. Hope this might be of some help.

It could also be your fan belt may need replacing or tightening mine did this now doesn't after a good tighten uo! Best way to heck whether it is loose is to push it down in the middle between the alternator and fan.

Does it make the sound at standstill?
Need to ascertain whether it is indeed the gearbox/transfer gears or something wheel/other related.

Would just like to start off by saying thanks for your replies, and sorry for not being able to make a response sooner due to being away for 2 weeks on holliday.
As for the car, the sound is not present while the car is idling at a standstill, Ive noticed that the noise is only really able to be heard starting at and over about 20-30mph which it then gets louder and louder the higher the speed. The car seems to be behaving as normal in relation to the rev speed when driving. Could the sound be wheel bearings or do you think it could be related to the gearbox etc?
Thanks again.

The whining is usually common in minis, think its the syncro spining up 2nd gear, usually the newer the box the stronger the whine.
But if its happening while the clutch is pressed then it might be a problem.

sounds like a wheel bearing.
Drive down a hill & turn the engine off (if you can) and see if the noise is present, then you will know whether its an engine related issue or not.
My wheel bearing was worn and made whining noises. If the noise is being made in any gear & doesnt change if you dip the clutch or not and the noise changes with speed this would suggest an issue with drive.
