evening, afternoon,morning
i am currently renewing my love for mini's having not owning one for 6 years(i'm sorry) but i've had a few ideas for what i want under the bonnet so i'm wanting peoples advice please. i'm swinging between possibly and metro turbo engine or maybe something like a 1340 on carbs as my friend races something similar and its awesome.
or unless someone who can tell me the pro's and con's on these 2 engines
cheers
look forward to you hearing from you
Simon :)

Welcome to the site!

The engines are different. Both are rather powerful and are not the most reliable of engines.

1380 will not need any modifications to the body of the car unless you're fitting Weber carbs.

A turbo engine requires a bit of welding to be done to the bulkhead. Also to fit a turbo engine you will need the metro turbo gearbox, fuel pump, regulator, fuel tank (or use the mini one but a return line has to be tapped). It's not as easy as dropping it in but its not that hard either.

If it were me I'd go with the turbo engine, since I think its more reliable (?) if you run it on low (reasonable boost). Even on low boost you should easily be able to get 95 or so hp, and that is very quick in a mini!

The 1380 would give you more torque probly and no turbo lag, but reliability is questionable and you'd also have to uprate your gearbox, which would end up costing quite a bit.

If these seem too extreme for you, a 1293 may be the best choice for u, since its relatively reliable so can be used daily if you want, it has good torque for driveability and will still put out aruond 90hp. The gearbox however may have to be revamped every so often depending on how you use it (use it reasonably and it'll last as long as the engine)

umm I THINK they are brake horsepower (that's what they are quoted as), but definitely expect them to be a few less.

I doubt they are at the flywheel because that would mean the 1293 would put out something like 72-75 at the wheels and thats what a well tuned MG puts out...

Dont go with a turbo, straight line C**p! :)

Go for an NAS engine with a Weber... :cheese:

i heard turbos have a habit of needing major overhauls in short periods of time, id go for the normally aspirated engine

cheers for your help everyone. its going to be a weekend car so i'm planning big power i have i bit o knowledge about mini engines as me and my dad did an engine swap but it was just a straight swap. my mate races a 1071 block on a 1275 head (i think) with a single carb and ecu in it and he's getting about 100bhp at the wheels.
