i have a 1990 mini city that i have just fitted a 1275 engine into. the engine is standard apart froma minisport lcb, 2" linkpipe and twin exit back box. alloy inlet manifold and a pancake filter.

i rebuilt the engine with new piston rings, gaskets and seals throughout. it has electronic ignition. new plugs and leads.

it starts easily and idles smooth. rev it up while stationary and its ok. when you drive it and try to accelerate steadily it holds back and misses a bit then clears. if you floor it to accelerate it just pins you in the seat and goes like a rocket with no missing or holding back. trouble is you cant drive everywhere flat out!!!!

we put it on my mates emission tester to set it up and the timing. the co level is about 2.6 and the hydrocarbons are around the 500-600 mark whatever that means. my mate said that was good? timing is set as per haynes bible for a 1275 with electronic dizzy. when you rev it up the car is really lean so could the carb be to small? or wrong needle? its a HS4 carb but i got 2 of them, one from a 998 and one from the 1275 and may have them mixed up ;)

how do you tell the difference between needles if i strip the carbs? and what needle should i have for a 1275?

i have a HIF44 carb as well, would i be better putting this on?

any help would be appreciated

take the dash pot off be careful dropping it¨. the needle is held in with a set screw take it out do not bend the needle at the top is a letter code for example AAA read it and let me know. its not hard to do a needle but you do need to understand how it works.
I can tell what you have but what you need is a diffrent story.
if fact tell me what they all are and i will look tomorrow for you.
HiF44 is good as well

Hi, just check you havent got the same problem as me, Ive just fitted a minisport stage 1 and the exhaust was causing my petrol in the float chamber to get too hot, which was giving me a really bad flat spot. Ive solved the problem by wrapping all the exhausts manifold in exhaust wrap.

Hi,

I have a 998 1992 mini with a stage one kit fitted (Fletcher from header back) and when I accelerate I sometimes get these what sound like small back fires all together it sounds like a child bowing raspberrys I have changed the coil has electronic ignition and about to change the spark plugs.

I'm not too sure if it's a timing issue or a carb tuning . Thu is my first car and first mini so I'm not 100% on how everything works just yet

Thanks,
Jordan

Check the timing and get the mix etc set up(a friendly mot centre will use the emissions machine)

I bought the car and was told it had a stage one needle in it as they bought the parts separate over Time. I'm not 100% sure what needle it is

And thanks for the replys
