Hello
Just fitted a new engine to my 1995 1275 SPI mayfair, i put in a 1275 metro carb engine! Got everything going and works lovely, one big problem - at idle she overheats very quickly! when investigating the pproblem with hose pipe and a hose i found that the water pump does not pump the water around at idle. as soon as the engine is revd and then held at a higher rpm the water flows fine. if you then drop it back down to idle the flow stops! Obviously a big problem when sitting in traffic! Why could this be? Could the rad be blocked and then only at a higher rpm does it suck the water out and round?
All suggestions welcome and appreciated!

Have you checked the fan belt? For wear and correct tension? And how old is the actual pump? If the belt is OK see about getting a new pump and flushing coolant out / through. New pumps aren't all that pricey or difficult to fit.

I'd definitely get a new pump on it, and a new thermostat.
Cheap plastic impeller pumps regularly loose their fixing onto the impeller, and on a very old metal one the blades can rot away.
Also, a smaller water pump pulley could help if you are currently running a large one.
