So I'm starting to overhaul the starter tonight... but it just kind of hit me that before the starter was giving me trouble..
Basically before the car wouldn't start I had some spark plug issues. The far right plug (yeah i know...) was dying on me constantly to a point that I'd keep an extra in the car and the minute that the car would lose power and start sounding like a VW Beetle I'd jump out put a new plug in and off we'd go!
Then some old fogie told me that because we're using lead replacement petrol in south africa it was killing plugs because the engine didn't have enough lead in... I'm sure this isn't the correct explanation, but this is how I understood him. Car went perfectly fine until the solenoid started smoking...
so... does anyone have a good explanation for my car eating spark plugs?

He could be partly right, the plugs don't need lead but the different fuel would need different advance settings so the plugs could be getting a little too hot. Look at the colour of the pot insulator on the plug to judge - the colour page in your Haynes expains it
Plugs / cylinders number from the radiator end as that'd be the front of the engine in a boring rwd, inline engine, car.
