After some advice i had been given, that i needed to lap my valves i decided to do it, how long should it take to get the ring round the valve? how thick does the ring need to be? I just feel like i'm getting nowhere with it, as i am hardly seeing anything.

The valve seat should have a sort of satin grey finish to it and should be even all the way around. Same on the valve.

Depends on the valve seat, if you look at the head and valves it should be obvious where the cutter has been as there'll be a flat area - you're just trying to restore that to a uniform dull band.

Are you doing it by hand with the sucker on the vavle? if so try using the power drill method. Put the valve stem in a drill and slowly spin up the drill.

i thought about doing it with a drill but was told it could easily put score lines in. or is that just a myth?

when i did mine i found the drill chuck was too big to do half them them with the power drill, it kept touching the head, so i used an old manual one with a handle, back and forth, worked very well indeed

Takes anywhere between 2 minutes and 20 per valve, depending on wear, I'd stick with the plunger and just roll it through your hands, lifting, turning 120deg and putting back in every now and again, (to help get things even - the valve spins in use remember).

Have you got coarse and fine lapping paste? Use some coarse and go until you can't hear anything, wipe some off, and then go again, 3 or 4 times like that you should get something going on.
