this weekend we will be at angelsey for a mammoth four qualifying sessions and five races over the two days
thats an hour of qualifying and an hour and twenty five minutes of racing!!!
this is because we are racing both in the performance and economy sports and saloons championship ANDthe welsh sports and saloons championship
ive had feedback from some of our racers wanting more track time so beat that for a weekend
to be fair it makes sense if you tow the car to a meeting if you can get two or three races in the day then the racings cheaper pro rata
we are also going to do the same trick at croft at the end of the month racing with the northern saloons as well as our own championship
angelsey will be manic on the saturday with us going on first qualifier then 4th qualifier then at 1 30 we start racing we are on first fourth and last race
on sunday we are first and 4th qualifiers again then fourth and last race
cannot wait as this will be as good as it gets
if you can get along please do as theres bound to be plenty of action, if you are handy on the spanners it might help if anyone breaks down we need to get them back on track asap

From what I have been told they all broke down again, whats going on you Z car racers.

well thats not strictly correct
we all went out in first qualifying and five laps in paul in the proplant v tec was smacked in the rear wheel by a total idiot in a G60 ginetta this caused him to roll several times over down the track, he landed on his wheels and was fetched back into the pits
we worked on the car but missed second qualifying for the normal championship race we enter everyone else qualified as usual
i was on grid 9 for the first race and came out of the first corner in 3rd, got passed by a seat cupra touring car and a mondeo touring car(the ex works phil reed one), had a hell of a good race with a guy in a silva phoenix and eventually finished 5th overall
second race qualified 11th was 3rd through first corner and gradually got passed by the big guys was lying 6th when the cv boot split and covered the exhaust in grease which filled the car with smoke with 2 laps to go, i stopped because i thought it was a major problem could have finished if id twigged what it was
paul started the race but pulled in after the handling wasnt really right with our hasty repairs and he felt it was best to do so
jem snowden and chris thomas both finished
last race i was 5th on the grid i had put a second hand drive shaft in for this race and it broke on the start line
everyone else ran the race
sunday first qualifier jem snowden blew a rod in the supercharged v tec
paul proplant was back on the pace but broke a drive shaft as it was the first time he had given the car some stick after the accident, examination of the shaft showed it had been damaged when the Ginetta hit him
it snapped the actual shaft like a carrot and is typical of an accident when two cars catch each others wheels when the leading car is on full power
i qualified 9th again
second qualifier i was 11th but had a grumbling cv joint
chris thomas just kept going in every session!!!
first race got a storming start again and was lying 5th overall again when the cv joint gave up so i retired
chris thomas had an epic battle with a TR7 and just beat him to the finish
last race chris found the sprocket nut had come off and we decided 2 hours racing in one weekend was sufficient and to go home
so basically proplants problems were due to a mad swede who didnt speak english and who caused several accidents over the weekend and was black flagged
jem snowden has a 400 bhp standard honda v tec supercharged in the car and has found the limit he is putting a set of rods and pistons into his next engine which should cure the problems he has had recently, its fair to say that he has run an identical set up on his grass track car for 3 years with no problems so thought we could do the same on tarmac perhaps not
my problems with drive shafts are a good thing
that may soud a daft thing to say but we have moved away from the early set up of sierra drive shafts as you cant get them any more we went to ford mondeo and have used them for several months weve also lowered the engines and straightened the drive shaft angles all a good thing
i was getting genuine ford shafts and fitting them they are on jems car and proplants v tec both have doe more miles than me and with bigger bhp and torque figures so why are mine causing trouble
the first break i had was at oulton park i had finished the car the night before the race and the shaft cv needed machining to get the correct end float i did this but took too much off the cv joint and it broke, my fault entirely
new shaft and a new supplier this guy supplies shafts to andrew page unipart etc etc
brand new shafts cant go wrong cheaper than ford and he is selling thousands of them every month
bought 50 of them
fitted one ran it at oulton park, rockingham and mallory, cv joint failed in the race at mallory, no cv grease in the joint at all absolutly dry gaiter had come off and some grease about but not much cv joint had literally burnt out
check new shaft has cv grease in it and try again
gaiter comes off after four races/qualifiers similar amount of use as previous failure
change shaft for one id cobbled together from bits on the bench at home everythings covered in black grease and i dont twig that the spline on the shaft is slightly smaller than in the cv joint everythings supposed to be std ford in every way remember fit this shaft and it spins the spline in the cv
go back to the earlier shaft that had lost its boot on the saurday fill with grease refit boot do two qualifiers and boot comes off again
no more bits available so do our best with it un seize it as much as we can but its buggered basically
so conclusions are go back to ford cv joints on the outer end at least they seem to have more clearance in the ball races allowing grease to circulate around the joint freely the non genuine ones are much tighter in clearance and dont allow flow of grease then build up heat which causes cv gaiter to pop off then even less grease available and bang
phew that took some writing
my theory is racing improves the breed and my problems are good at identifying both the trouble and the cure because we did so much this weekend i was able to get my head round what was happening to the cv joints and i still have enough racing left to test the cure
i can tell when its going to come on now as you get a vibration in that wheel for a while beforehand that gets steadily worse
next race is at croft 4 practice and four races over two days again
my neck still hurts from what we did this weekend, couldnt be an F1 pilot

hi chris what a great weekend that was well for some of us that first race you had with the welsh was a very good bit of driving realy fun to watch you & the other z cars its a shame that you had all that trouble with cv joints
jem snowdons vtec looked very quick along the back straight it made it look like some of the cars were going backwards the way it was over taking them

chris in the other red mini looked to be having a good time

i will get some pics up of the weekend shortly

are you going to the mini show at santa pod?

if so what you taking?

Yeah it was a really good weekend, some great racing and plenty of it!

Anglesey really is a great venue, the sea and the mountains make for a very impressive backdrop to the circuit. Plus the weather was great and it stayed dry all weekend, unlike every other race I've been to this season.

We watched most of the races from The Banking, which is the first real corner after the start/finish and it was great to see how many places the minis were making up at the start, especially in the first race when Chris came round the corner in 3rd, although we kind of guessed it wouldn't be long before the ex-works Mondeo got passed him as it looked incredibly rapid in qualifying.

Definietly going to be at the next double header... Well worth the money!
