Fitted my new setup this week.

Not bad for 65 quid total! Headunit is a Kenwood KDC W4031 (25 off ebay) and the speakers are Alpine SPE17 C2's (30 local car audio shop, also the same price on www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk), 10 for the DIN tray.

Speakers are 17cm, and as you can see, a little bit of hole-enlargement was required get them to fit - but it's really easy. Just put 10 or so cuts around the circumference of the hole, then using a pair of pliers, "peel" each tab back a nadgers.

It's obviously not in the same league as the 5 series audio system, but for 17cm speakers they pack a reasonable punch just running off the headunit - certainly enough to be able to feel the music as well as hear it, so I'm prety pleased - as I didn't want to go spending loads of money and putting amps/subs in.

Looks good, simple and elegant. Adding front speakers would vastly improve your setup though. Although im not keen on the wire for the speaker being routed through the same bare metal hole as the speakers.

Yeah, I'd imagine it would. But as I said, i've done the 'decent system' thing on the 5 series system (Alpine HU, iPod interface, Sony cabin speakers powered by an Alpine V12, 13" JL audio sub powered by a 600w Kenwood amp) - just wanted something in the mini to listen to other than the engine & exhaust!

The wiring is ok, there are no sharp edges near where it is clamped in place by the speakers.

Oh ok, well it just seemed a bit of a shortcut seeing the rest is nice and tidy.
