By water in the engine, do you mean it's in your oil? If you've got white goo on your oil filler cap then it sounds like your head gasket has gone rather than water running into the engine through the carb.
no white goo, i have done the head gasket, havent driven it anywhere since but check the dip stick and seemed very watery

Think you would get starting problems with a carb full of water and would be near impossible for water to find it's way in whilst running.
Do you not have an air filter you can fit on?
Is the car kept outside with no bonnet on?

it is kept outside with a bonnet on, bit the is a gap for it to make its way thru. have fitted the air filter on to

yeah torqued it down properly, so whats ur thoughts on it then?If youve got water in the oil, then water wont be coming through the carb - most likly place is head gasket like has already been said. You sure you torqued the bolts down properly when you put it on, and then again after running it for a bit?
