Don't. They're horrible to use.
Had to use them when I was at college, and hated it! So I took my Canon in...
If you want a Nikon, go for a D70.

compared to all the canon or pentax cameras ive used. nikon feel cheap and not solid if that makes sence.
for an entry level slr i would get the 400d, not the 450d, i used one a month or so ago and it sounds like its eating squirrles when the shutter snaps.

im in partial i use canon/nikon/pentax/
but wierdly the best camera i have used is a canon 400d. not the nikon d700, and i got better results with the 400d.

The D40 (and D40X) is a decent enough entry level camera but it does not have an AF motor in the camera body, hence you must buy the lens with the motor in which are more expensive and you have less choice.
What's your budget? Find out what is available within your budget and go and play with them. I opted for Nikon originally as I didn't like the tiny Canon bodies. They didn't feel right.

Just to add my two cents!
I prefer the the D40 over the canons due to the adjustment for things like exposure being on the back not on the grip. I also didn't like the way the canons thumbwheel seemed to be to far for me to reach on the back when holding the canons. I had a play with canons, sonys, and olympus's in an independent camera store in sheffield and was really impressed with the sonys. Working in a computer store where we teach photographing software I would say you can't deny the image quality of the canons but all are good.
To sum it up go with what you like at that sort of price range yours not going to be disappointed by any. Sonys use the minolta fittings so second hand lenses can be used whereas olympus use pentax the only thing with the nikons is I think its a new lense profile so secondhand stuff is harder to get
