I kinda understand the advantages of polishing the conrods, but, is ti done using a simple mop and soap (not actual soap, but can't remember anything but abriviations)

i have these facilities at work, but not sure if this is the correct way of doing it,

is the aim of the exersice to achieve a mirror finish or mearly remove the dulling of the material,

thanks in advance

Hi..If you are going to the trouble of polishing rods you would be better to lighten and balance them first, this is done by weiging all four rods and take notes to each ones weight then using a dammel drill and a carbide bit lightly remove metal from the 3 heavier rods so they all weigh the same as the lightest rod, then you balance them end for end, to do this you will need nut and bolt and 2 washes, take 2 rods and bolt small ends together and place them pice of angle iron so as to try and balance with heavier end lightly remove steel from rounded edges so then balance end for end , repeat with other pr of rods and job done....................... :P

hey mate,

thanks for replying, then conrods are already lightened and balanced, so i was only enquiring about polishing as this is the only thing not done..

is it really worth doing it, if they provide any more power/efficientcy then i will do it

Polishing the con rods has the same effect as polishing your car, it reduces drag.

To balance rods you should use two sets of scales. place one end of the rod on each scale. Take notes as to the total weght and the rod end weight. You can then tell which is the lightest rod and from which ends you need to remove material to make the other rods as near to identical across the scales as possible.

Always grind along the rod and never across it. Polishing is the same, always along the length of the rod. Polishing makes the rod less susceptible to stress fractures but any decreased drag will not make an appreciable difference. The strength advantage is definitely worth while if you are running lots of torque though!

You need to start with a small grinder bit on a multi-tool or similar just to take out the casting marks. Then move onto some reasonable grit sandpaper. Then just work your way down various grades of wet n dry till they feel nice and smooth. You can then polish them properly with a polishing wheel and appropriate compound for ferrous metals.

You need to do the polishing BEFORE the rods are lightened and balanced.
