Ive been told this is most likely due to worn Baulk Rings,
What are the Baulk Rings, Where are they, and How do i replace them?
Cheers

To replace them, you take the gearbox apart and fit new ones. It's too involved to go into details here. Read through Haynes and as many other manuals you can get your hands on before you start taking the gearbox apart. Taking digital photographs at each step may prove helpful during re-assembly.

The modern version of Haynes, (dark blue book) is not so helpfull..... but If you read the LIGHT blue version which I think is up to 1984, ( could be wrong on that date)...... their is a complete and total strip and rebuild guide..... Ive just followed it...... however.... my advice before you start is read the whole thing through 3 times before you pick up a spanner..... and also make sure you read the complete gearbox chapter AND the chapter about reassembling the Diff......

this is very true its a shame that the modern haynes series has seemed to move away from the true DIY style that made it so popular in the first place..... its understandable when dealing with the newer cars and the host of electronics that go with them but what really changes about the minis essential structure and mechanics?.......rant over

yes the earlier manual (dealing with 1969-1988) is much more helpful but still needs to read in triplicate before you start as mentioned before......good luck!
