Well. I got my front tyres changed today, and while the car was jacked up. The tyre changer gave my wheel a swift pull and the wheel was wobbling around.

He says hes not sure what it is because he isnt a mechanic, Hes a quickfit tyre changer. But he said it could be the Ball Joints or the Wheel bearings...

Is there any way of telling which one it is. And whats the damage to my pocket?

Also, Is it safe to drive?

quick way to tell, jack car up and support on axle stands, grab wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and push and pull alternately with hands.... it it wobbles it's more likely to be bearings, hold wheel @ 12 and 6, and do same, if it wobbles there it's ball joints...

As both are a hub off procedure, if it's bearings, have a good look at the ball joints at the same time, anyway

Ok, well watching the Tyre fitter wobble my wheels and tell me how bad they are. Take the *yellow human water* and say "What pub did you get that MOT'd at"

Ive just been out and jacked it up now, Gave it a wobble and nothing.

the 3 oclock 9 oclock wobble was fine. No play at all...

The 12 oclock 6 oclock wobble had a fraction of play in it. By a fraction, I mean like 1mm...

Is that still a MOT faliure?

Yes. MUCH MORE!

Whether its because he was stronger than me and he could give it a better pull or what. :erm:

But yea. I got it home on my Jack, jacked it up and I couldnt get more than 1mm or so play out of it! Which is a good thing. Isnt it.... :w00t:

It does sound like it should be ok, but if you doubt it at all get a mechanically minded friend to give it a shake.

Name & shame, was it a kwiker than average fitter?
