1992 Cooper Spi

In amongst the inlin fuses there is a rather large (10p size square) black spade type connector with two brown ish wires coming from it, there is nothing within reach that it could plug into ....any ideas?

hoping that this is the cause of:::

flash / horn and brake test lamp not working

See if you can post up a picture. A spade connecter the size of a 10 pence piece sounds mighty strange to me.

Well it might not be a spade it looks like it si the female bit of a connection if you know what i mena

Some looms have spare connectors, one white (ignition feed) and one brown ( permanant live) for auxilary items.

Perhaps its one of those.

If everything works, then chances are thats what it is.
