1992 Cooper Spi

May be overheating, took car for a fifteen minute spin all was well, parked up let car tick over for another ten minutes or so while i messed about outside.

Steam deemed to ber coming from the engine bay so i checked temp gauge in the RED. Switched off left for five minutes and undie (slowly) the rad cap, steam hissed out for approx 40 seconds.

Let engine cool then refilled rad, turned engine on and heater on with cap off let to run and topped up when necessary.

problem now is my heater does not even have warm air (before it worked fine) all pipes from the rad at the top are red hot, the one after the thremostat is red hot the one after the heater valve is only sklightly warm. I have checked and lubed the valve all seems externally to be working ok.

ALSO my electric aux illary fan did not come on at all!!!!! What connections do I check for this please.

Suggestions please??????

Cheers

Sounds like you need a new thermostat? 88 degrees is the norm.

As for your auxiliary cooling fan (which really should have come on), the easy way to check it is to remove the grille from the front of the car, then unclip the 2 spade terminals from the fan switch on the lower/front of the radiator.

Then connect these spade terminals together with a paper clip, turn on your ignition and the auxiliary fan should spring into action.

If it doesn't then you need to check the fuse. On my Mainstream Cooper its the 15amp - Blue/Red Wire in-line fuse situated behind the air filter. I don't know if it's the same for SPi Coopers as the later Haynes manual doesn't say and it confuses the hell out of me anyway.

So check your original owners hand book if you have one, or just check all the in-line fuses?

If the fan does come on though, then you need to replace the fan switch. I believe it just pushes in?
