had this posted in the general problems section and was advised to post here for better response:

car: 99 cooper 1.3 MPi
problem: water temp sensor is shot, so my radiator fan stays on all the time
fix: replace sensor and remove error code from ECU using some diagnositic device

So now i need to know what to buy and where to find it. I'm hoping someone will help this greenhorn out.

Thanks

I saw this in the general section...... to the best of my knowledge the fact that the error code is their wount make a difference if the sensor is replaced. The ECU will recognise the new sensors readings but will leave an error flag so that when a disg kit is plugged in the person assessing the car will know that a fault has been logged since the last reset. The car should run normally its just the flag is their for information when the next diag is done. If you cant get a diag kit then just change the sensor and wait till you can find a diag unit

Hope this helps

This is posted in this link at the top of the forum:
http://www.theminifo...x...=34741&st=0

Although the title indicates SPi, information for MPi is also posted.

Here is the info for SP ACR
Part Number:Product Name Price
30055400: ACR4 Code Reader £435.56
30214000: Rover 16 Pin Harness Mpi £75.00
30350800: Rover Pod £92.99
30211600: Rover Harness Spi £55.42

Prices are new prices. Other older pods will work on just SPi and older cables will work on MPi also.
These show up on eBay on a regular basis.

I don't remember when I posted this so the prices are out of date. The Sykes unit is more expensive, it does read both SPi and MPi with the appropriate pod and cables. Rover pod version 3 or higher is required for MPi. There have been posts that version 3 works better than version 4.

As indicated abpve the tool is not required to fix the problem. It would allow you to confirm the problem.
