hey tech's...

righto i've been having problems with my Mpi.. its a 2000 Wreg..

when i drive the car i get a whirring / buzzing noise from the car (noise kinda sounds like a moped :D ). its a rolling noise and is not affected be engine revs or braking. however the noise gets progressivly louder from 30-60mph, then it evens out / the engine revs cancel the noise out so its hard to tell..

a couple of months ago i removed the driveshaft and pot joint on the right hand side (OSF) to replace the gasket on diff side cover. refitted everything and the oil leak was curred.. however around the same time (although could be a coincidence) this whirring noise appeared..

i have had the (OSF) driveshaft out a number of times since to try and rectify the problem, i've checked the wheel bearings (both sides new before noise started) and they're fine.. ive replaced the bearings on both ends of the (OSF) driveshaft including a new pot joint..

so before i do the same to the (NSF) driveshaft i thought i would ask the question here as im stumped!!

im really hoping its nothing inside the gearbox!!

cheers, Aron

Can you tell if the noise coming from the same side you worked on?

If its a feint buzzing noise its more than likely electrial?

Also when does it occur? Just driving straight, round corners, under load, coasting, and can you identify whereabouts you hear it when driving, I know the sound can seem from one place but be from somewhere else nearby but just as a guide?

Sure you didn't accidentally fit a supercharger? or power steering from a Bini? Accidental supercharger fitting is well known as the number 1 cause of unknown whirring noises in Minis produced under Rover :D

i thought it was coming from the side i worked on, and that i had moved something when i removed the pot joint! but now im hoping its the other side....

no its not an electrical sound.. its def mechanical

its definately a rolling noise.. and its no different when cornering, under load, coasting or driving straight!

its really weird because the engine pulls and feels really nice all the time i drive it..

this happened to me, and turned out to be fairly simple. first just check to see if either wheels moves in and out if you know what I mean. If it does, its probably either bearings, or in my case, the hub bolt was simply not tight enough! try tightening it to the correct torque, worked for me at least!

yeah worth a shot on the passenger side as ive not checked that since i changed the wheel bearing, the drivers side is tight for sure..

will have a go.. would love it to be that simple!

nope.. both castle nuts are def tight! both have the split pin still in place and the nut is showing approx 3 threads on each side..

i might have some dodgy wheel bearings..? i know they've been installed properly as they've been checked by a friend and my dad. both wheels bearings seem normal, with no grinding noise when i turn them by hand.

so i suppose i oughta change the joints/bearings on the NS driveshaft.. hmmm i wonder if the video recorder on my phone will pick up the noise, i'll have a go, and try and post up a vid..
