I'm modifying a centre console from a Fiat Coupé to fit a mini at the moment.
Here it is so far (still a lot to do on it though)....

I've covered all walls of the boot (including boot-lid, parcel shelf + tank) in thick soundproofing material, and cut two 2" venting "port" holes in the shelf then covered in vinyl (not visible).
The results are good!
Much better sound quality from the subs now, and the music isn't as audible from outside the car. 
I just need to get rid of that duct tape and it's done!
