I need to order some new nuts and bolts for my Mini, but wanted to check what the sizes mean. For example a 3/8" UNF bolt. Does the 3/8" refer to the diamater of the thread, or does it mean that it needs a 3/8" spanner to fit the head? Thanks.

I think its the size of the spanner you need, also a lot if not all of imperial spanner sizes do have exact metric equivalents

The sizes are nominal really. A 3/8" bolt will fit snuggly in a 3/8" hole.

3/8 UNF is the thread size if its the head size it would be 3/8 af (across flats).

Paul.
