Aside from the engine number - How can you tell a 998 and a 1275 apart?

Have you not got D vizards How to modify the mini? tells you in there!
Head is larger, bigger spacing between heater take off and rocker cover, and between rocker cover and thermostat, But doesn`t always mean its a 1275 as could have been modified

Erm, I don't think so - God knows what books Kris has got!
Thanks Kel!
You know the numbers on the actual block of the engine? The one that's actually cast into it - Does that mean anything?

Thanks Kel!

I don't know - I can't get to it at the moment... I just know that my spare 998 has 'WFM...' or something cast into the block?

Does it mean anything at all - Do they differ with 1275 and 998?
Sorry - I'm a complete simpleton!

I would look under the rocker cover to see the head casting number - this should give an idea on small bore or large bore.... if it IS a large bore head it is still possible it's on a small bore block, so then the tappet chest covers (on the back of the engine, ie against the bulkhead) would be a give away to it being small bore..

Small bore engines have tappet covers and a breather on the back.
The head wouldn't be 100% reliable as it could be a big bore head on a small bore engine.
I'm sure the casting numbers, wfm... , would help but I don't know which is which.

The tappet chest covers are a dead give-away..... unless it's a cooper S engine...
in which case the fuel pump connection on the back of the block will not be machined.
So... if it has a mechanical fuel pump and tappet chests it's a small bore ( 998 or 1098 )
