Hi,

I have a 1978 Mini 1000. Standard as standard can be, and a little worse for wear. It is my second mini my previous being a 1976 Australian assembled Clubman.

This problem as been with me since buying the Mini about a month ago. The odometer does not work, at all. The speedo does. I have searched this problem but only come up with people having incorrect speed readings.

Any help will be much appreciated, and if this topic as already been covered can someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Dave

If the speedo works it's got to be the odometer mechanism itself.

Chances are it'll be a lot easier to replace than fix - unless you get it apart and can see what is wrong. The mechanism is quite small and fiddly.

Try moving it with your finger, or putting some olive oil (small amount) through it. Sometimes if they have been left for a while they sieze up, and just need a little "Help" to free

It's worth a look, it may have just become loose. There's a worm gear around the input shaft and the gear it drives can become disengaged if it's loose. There's also a cam and pawl arrangement that pulls the numbers round it's relies on a hair spring and is quite fragile. I doubt you'll get any service bits but a lot of the mechanism will be common to all smiths speedos if you can find one kicking about. Failing that you'll have to replace the whole speedo or maybe use something like this.

Visit this page:

and download the PDF.

As mentioned above, since the speedo portion is working, your gauge is likely to have a problem with the pawl mechanism that drives the odo wheels. (i.e. If the small pawl arm return spring has broken there will be no motion to drive the number wheels).

Thanks for all that, next question, How do I get the speedo out? And also how do I remove the card-board style dash without destroying it in the process?

Thanks Again,

Dave
