The stuff that sticks well and doesnt come off with thinners is okay. It needs keying for primer though. I tend to use 320 on a DA (or by hand if you can be bothered!) then a red scotch brite for all the nooks and crannys.
Dont worry if you rub through to bare metal anywhere, but ideally its wise to etch prime any bare areas. Etch shouldnt need rubbing down or messing with before being surfaced primed.
