do you mean to pass the mot?
i dont think air horns pass on mot if they're hooked up to the main horn to replace it but if you had them on another switch you'd be ok.

As long as they are single tone the yes they will be OK for MOT, and yes they need to work at all times, ignition on or off, but if you leave you existing horn in aswell, and then feed the air horns from the ignition loom with an isolating switch, you can witch them off when you come to MOT anyway

one of the mini mags mentioned in this months issue that air horns are legal for pre 1973 cars. after that they are only for "show" use

I thinks that's multi tone horns ( like the Dukes of Hazard ones )

normal horns work without the ignition on, i don't know about air horns tho, my brothers mini has them and drives around in it making funny noises and looking like a complete and utter tw_t.

My ordinary beep-beep and the twin airhorns can be switched from the steering column. I forgot to switch back to beep-beep for the MOT, but nobody said anything, so ... was I just lucky?

I'm sure you can have air horns for an mot as long as they dont play tunes, so just a single tone as said before. My mums range rover had them and it passed fine.
Dont know about wether they've got to work with the ignition off but most car horns do work with the ignition off so there must be a reason for it.

Just keep your origional horn. And then wire the air horns on a seperate loom with another switch...
