I was out with my friend in his Mini last night and he'd just inflated his tyres to a decent pressure and said that it feels much tighter to drive and since I was after getting 10" wheels for my own car when it's finished I asked if he minded if I had a quick drive around a car park (we've all done it).

Anyway, we swapped over and I set off around the car park, went up a small bump in the road, about 1/4 of the size of a speedbump at about 10mph (I've driven over this very spot in my Mini at 30mph before and nothing has ever happened) and BANG, wondering what the hell had happened I drove back over to my friend and switched the engine off.

I got on my hands and knees and discovered that the sump had hit the ground and was now very slowly dripping oil. Now I couldn't understand how the hell this had happened but on closer inspection I noticed his rubber doughnuts have completely collapsed and the cars suspension is sat on the bump stops. Due to this it's obvious that if I hadn't have caught the sump, he would have done on a speedbump later on anyway and he's admitted this but I still feel incredibly guilty about the whole thing.

He keeps saying it doesn't matter (he was intending to convert to manual anyway, just not this soon) but it's not making me feel any less guilty. I'm going to sort this out and then I'm never driving anyone elses car again.

Things happen.
It's not as if you crashed into a lamp post doing something silly is it?

If anything you've helped him, collapsed suspension giving way at speed would be rather dangerous.

Well I just spoke with him.

I'm going to look at the gearbox tomorrow, if the crack isn't that bad (which I don't think it is, since it's just dripping slooowly, not pouring) he said he's perfectly happy with my just sealing it up with something. The engine never was a keeper, he's happy if I keep it going until he get's a manual.

im guessing its an auto then.... mine is very low also,im very carefull over bumps and potholes!

Yeah it is and it would seem:

Auto Box + Collapsed Doughnuts + Small Bump = CRACK

I'm sure my manual box doesn't come that far below the front panel.

Think I'll buy him a sump guard for christmas.

Thanks Geehawk, don't suppose I'd be lucky enough to be able to get that from my local Halfords? Saying that, I bet EK Brakes would stock it.

Autos are heavier, so the front tends to sit lower. You should see my hydrolastic Elf! I have to buy a very low trolley jack, because most just won't go under it.
