I could do with getting a second car, how many miles are 1.9 TDi engines good for? they seem pretty economical and i need something for motorway miles, so i'm thinking of picking up a passat, most of them have full service historys from company ownership, but when do they start to get unreliable?

Iv got a 1.9tdi 130ps passat on a 52 plate, has done just over 80.000miles and still going good, my bro works for audi and is saying when it gets to 100.000 it will start losing value etc.

As long as you keep on top of it, services, cam belts, look after it and drive it properly, then they'll last forever >_<

cool, I've seen some passats with around 130K on the clock goin for £1500 with a full dealer service history, if they are reliable at that mileage then i'll have a look at few

doesnt the 130 have a massive amount of torque? hows that to drive? and are they comfortable on the motorway?

Diesel is a lubricant which helps a little, but the main reason you can get more miles out of diesel lumps is because they are so low rpm: less crank spins 'n piston ups 'n down per mile.

Should be good for 200 000 miles if serviced well.

Sorry to go O/t here...

But whats the plus and neg points of an astra compared to a passat?

I've got a 2 litre Turbo Diesel 16v Astra Estate.

Shoved it on the rollers its putting out around 126bhp, and a good 178ft/lb of torque. and last week I got 72MPG from it.
Nice, powerful, and comfy, I enjoy driving the astra, although, I'd personally prefure if the suspention was a bit harder.

We had a Pug 405 estate that we sold to some friends who needed a car - I think it's a 1.7 TDi, but it is a fantastic workhorse that is still as tight as a drum after 250,000 miles and it's very comfortable. It's gone a long way and doesn't show any signs of stopping yet. >_<

well maintained dubs with diesels lumps reguarly reach 200k, hell the petrol engines are well capable of doing 150k. My brothers 1.9 tdi golf has done 173k and still runs well, and does 50+ to the gallon

I wouldnt be worried at all buying one with between 100-150k, as long as there is evidence that it has been maintained >_<
