hey guys, we just picked up a metro today, to go into a mates mini, its a 1988 metro ARX.
looking at the engine, its got a std austin rocker cover, but the engine number begins 12hd, and teh carb is an hif44. this is an mg engine isnt it?
im fairly certain that some mg engines were 12hd, and only the mg's ran hif44's.
am i right?
its a sound little car, solid shell and the engine is very sweet, the gearbox feels smooth and not too sloppy.
cost £100, so twill be robbed of brakes and engine.
basicly just checking to ask if its definately an mg engine?
an 88 engine would also have a leaded 12g940 head wouldnt it?
cheers
nick

12HD is just the generation, it's the next 3 or 4 number/letter which signify the application.
12 - 1275
H - Horizontal
D - age/year (ish)

I think 12HD24* were MG Metros ( possibly also VDP's ) and 12HD26 are turbo units. The rest of the 12HD series are standard...
All 1275 Metros have a base 12G940 casting, the difference is the size of the valves ( and potentially number of valve springs )

I have found this reference to a 12HD head
12HD24 = MG Metro 1300 leaded fuel pre 1989 1275cc 12H996AA, 12HD24
Please note that if it is this it is a head designed for Leaded Fuel.
Their are lots of lists available giving details of A series engine numbers just search on Google.
Cheers Ben.
