When taking them off the are usually really stiff, for both types of flywheel/clutchs (verto and pre-verto) iv have to use a breaker bar with a 2meter pipe on the end of it to get the puller to pull the flywheel off... If that doesnt work tighten it as tight as you can, leave it over night then the next day tighten it more, etc... do that for a couple of days, if still nothin let the bolt out then try again, if still nothing try heating up where the flywheel meets the crank, heat the flywheel and not the crank.

Some people will tell you to hitt it through the starter hole, but dont do this as it will weaken the flywheel and could explope later on in its life, you can hit the center bolt of the flywheel puller though as that sometimes wobbles it free.

Good luch mate they can be a *horrid woman* to get off.

You decided to get your mini fixed up then?

i dont mean to kinda steal this post but i have had the same thing...

i have two metro engines here atm, one has had the clutch fairly recently replaced, the other hasnt...

we have the engine out the car and i have held the engine down while my dad tried to undo it with a torque wrench on the flywheel puller but to no success...

we dont know maybe if it has rusted on there at all maybe on the taper shaft is it :D here are some pics i dunno if you have the same symptons as mine does!

Old and rustyy!

The first thing to do is buy a new torque wrench then, or at least get yours calibrated. Torque wrenches are precision measuring tools and not for use in this way, it has more than likely slipped out of calibration or may have broken completely if you've put any kind of serious load through it.

Next, take the locking key washer out of the end of your crankshaft before using the puller. Also make sure the slot in the crank nose is horizontal before pulling off the flywheel or it may jam solid against the C washer.

we took out the locking key washer after this pic was taken... still no luck

We put some plusgas on it as even before we tried to remove it the engine was a bit creaky, and didnt turn too well

A nice pit in what old bolt? There shouldn't be a bolt in the end of the crank, only the special adapter piece to protect the threads from the main puller bolt.

You put PlusGas on what exactly? A release fluid is unlikely to help the flywheel taper to release.

Hi guys,

My dad and I are having exactly the same problem! I've got a mg metro engine with a verto clutch what just wont budge, just wondering (I know this post was a long time ago) if you figured out a way to get it off?

Cheers :)

I have removed 2 verto clutches now,and one on a engine that has been stood a fair bit. I have the Sykes pickavant puller and had no probs. As mentioned, you need the slot on end of crank horizontal or the washer can jam if its vertical when using pulley.
Verto Bolt and keyed washer out, then the small round adaptor from the pulley assembly to tighten the bolt up against so it pulls the flywheel.

Thank you, yeah we've been doing all that but still no luck, must be doing something wrong somewhere! I'll have to double check everything and give it another go tomorrow.

Guessworks "Gerrof ya b'stard" Puller is a popular option when they're really bad.

The couple I've done recently came off without too much fuss. A good clump with a mallet helped one decide to move, the other came off with no special measures.
