Model: City E
Year: 1986

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Stage 1 Kit

Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

My car's been running like utter pap recently. I put it into the garage to sort out the exhaust and to set up my fueling and carb, yesterday.

He couldn't find some parts to be able to set it up properly.

Apparently what he needs is an overhaul kit for my carb - Including new jet and new needle.

Only thing is, Reggie has a Stage 1 kit - so this means that he needs replacement stage one parts!?

But I have no idea what to buy

I did a search and it came up with something called an AAA or an AAU needle - But I'm not sure what the benefits or differences are on either - or if that's even the correct one!?

My garage chap said something about it being a 1 1/2" SU? Is that right? Is that a standard city one? :D

Also - where do I find jets? What on earth do they look like? Can I get a complete kit with everything or do I need to buy bits separately?

If someone could point me in the right direction and lemme know what I need to buy, that'd be great! ;D

Um - think that's it?

:proud:

Fankooo!

Minispares sell refurb kits.
You will need to know wether your Carb is HS or HIF,
and if its Waxstat or Red Bottomed.

Pictures will help i can identify what it is.

Needle i recommend you go to a rolling road, and they will be able to give a perfect Needle to match your engine, they will also sort out any other issues, and get the the car running sweet as a nut.

Bean, can you in your photo skills get a few pictures of your carb, including the thing pointing down under it.

Also on the float bowl there should be a metal tag, can you get that code?

take a trip over too burlen.co.uk

it is a 1 1/2 hs4 i do believe, if it hasnt been changed since i last saw it.

when you take the carb apart, for whatever the reason is, the 3 letters are stamped on the needle top.

i have a stage one needle here somewhere if your stuck for one.

did he say why it needs a overhaul?

How much does a rolling road cost though?

Would it make more sense to get it set up on there and pay them for the parts rather than getting my garage man to do it and then getting it rolling roaded afterwards?

Fankoo!

RIght well for your future referece it is a:
SU HS4 Waxstat carburettor.
from that you will be able to buy the appropriate Kit from Mini spares.
If you dont want to rolling road it, find out what needle you have got, it will have it written on the actual needle.
and they are available from Minispares and others again.

This one?

Or do I need the full one?

:proud:

Then just buy a replacement needle that is the same that is in there now... Or take it to a rolling road and get them to set the needle and tune it?

Many thanks for your help, all!

Wolfy - Yeah, I think Kris and I will do the rebuild if we do take it for a rolling road afterwards. If we don't want to RR it, I'll just put it into the garage to do!

Ain't Google brilliant :proud:

It could get expensive on a rolling road if the car need more than setting up.

SU's are simple enough to overhaul yourself.

Okie dokie! Fankoo!

I think we'll overhaul it ourselves and try to set it up as best as possible - If it's still a bit crappy, we'll get it to a RR!

Many thanks for your help everyone! :proud:

Hey Bean,

I was told by the guy at Aldon that he thought my jet needed replacing and he said that they do the kit, or was going to say what I needed...the needle I got with my Stage 1 was an AAU (I think) but Lily wasnt running right, so he put an AAA in. The jets you can replace yourself, but no idea how hard it is...im sure Kris would be able to do it though! :proud:

Aldon Bean, take Reggie to Aldon!!

http://www.burlen.co.uk and you could also convert it to a non waxstat jet at the same time.
